Being outside on Sepia Saturday.......

My older brother Ron with Rex, my second oldest brother,  sitting out on the front porch.  I know they are posed and it is cold, but the light is good out there for taking pictures. I am dating this picture as being around 1943.

My parents Zella Brown and Jesse Burgus at the time.  They were dating so it was the summer of 1940. They are visiting a state park.  I have an album full of different people who are there with them on that day. The camera does work well outside in the sunshine.

A daily vacation Bible School class lines up out in front of the parsonage to get their activity recorded in history on film.  In the summer in Iowa the sun does get directly above us and it looks like the tops of their heads are getting good sun. My mom is in the back row and she must be helping with the class. I don't see any of my brothers in this photo so they were too young to be in this class.  I date this around 1944.

Outside in 1951 in the spring stands Larry, the most blurry one, and my brother Dwight.  I am over one and a half years old here and that make Dwight four years old.  Outside works for good lighting but the old box camera works only when you can figure out how to turn that little focus knob and look into that postage size glass viewfinder.   Most all of my baby pictures and older are a blur to me and are a visual blur to everyone else too.

The digital world has turned photography into a whole different world. Not only did you have to find the light with your box camera,  you also had to find the developer to make your photos.  So many times bad pictures were paid for when the photographer was young and inexperienced. Other time the adult was" wasting film" as we use to call it due to operator error.  Whatever way we now take our photos, it still is such an art form and a wonderful way of recording life and it's history.  It is just like a Kodak commercial that you can snap an instant memory.

Fine pictures Larry. I'm glad I can now put my camera on automatic and let it do the rest. I was never very good when I had to get a picture i focus so most pictures of mine before the 1990s leave something to be desired.

I love that you have snapshots of your family past.

We have some of ours but I wouldn't have any idea about putting into English words. (It would need to be in Chinese, but I cannot read nor write that lol)

I'm still a big fan of paper/film... even though, I have digital cameras mostly these days. There's something wonderful about finding a small snapshot of the past somewhere...

Personally, those often blurry, under/over exposed or off-centred shots often have the character that's missing in well posed and composed photos. Thanks for sharing these from your archives, Larry.

Umm hmm times are so different. I love these photos starting with the two chubbie little guys....yes amazing how far we have journeyed with photography....I think about that...especially today when we went to have church photos taken & all were terrible...nowadays there is no excuse for a bad photo...I am sharing some from 1940 this week and the clarity of the black and whites and reflections.

Don't forget light meters. Raise your hand if you remember light meters. Walking around pointing it, trying to get the right settings on the camera, taking the shot and keeping your fingers crossed.

These days it's almost too easy to take shots and the bad ones can just be deleted which is a real shame. Think of all the images people delete with no foresight that the moment is now gone.

That's a nice bunch of family photos. I especially like the Bible School boys in bib overalls. I grew up in a city and suburb where nobody wore overalls.

Now that first picture is so cute; definitely not sun, sand and sea though! I like the blurry baby photos too, and I agree with Brett, they seem to have so much more character.

What a lovely post! Having my first digital camera has reignited my interest in photography. Even I can get a good picture if I push the shutter often enough!

Your brothers are so bundled up in the first photo it's hard to imagine how they moved from place to place. Perhaps a childish waddle was the best they managed. Great photos. Thanks for sharing.

I love that first photo of your brothers - what a treasure. I wish the one of you and Dwight was just a little clearer...darn. I have wasted a lot of film in my time, but with digital I do a lot better.
