One photo day......

These are cousins from the Madison County area in Iowa. At this point I don't know who they are nor do I know who the woman is standing on the porch. The photo is one more picture that has the chicken house in the background and the taller old tree in it.  I have many photos of my mom and her brother or other cousins standing by that disfigured tree.  It probably is a great Uncle's farm place but there were six of them in that family, so which one could it be?

It is a mystery that my cousin once removed and I am working on.  I will have to do some digging and cataloging and see if the site can be found on one photo. That is all it is going to take to figure it out.

Whatever the case, it's a charming and mysterious photo. There's also something very pleasing about the shadows.

Good luck with the hunt. I hope you find out who they are.

Cute kids, I do hope that you manage to find out more about this photo.

There is something wonderful desolate about the scene. For some reason I think that the picture would make a perfect book cover, it just seems to open so many questions ready for answering.

The chase is such fun, isn't it? It's a beautifully composed photograph; the light and shadows mirror the unknown story.

I agree with Alan...the unanswered questions make it even more interesting! I love that you can pick out the old gnarled tree in so many of your old photos! :)

So like solving a puzzle, I find the photos can consume hours as I chase them around too, especially when working with different sources..oh if they had only labeled everything how much easier it would be! Mybe you will let us know when you find the matching photos! Hmm, I agree with Alan, a book cover, now for the story.

I have a problem similar to yours. I have a bunch of family photographs with a building in the background that should tell me something. I have a guess where, but one of these days I'm going to post the photos and ask readers from the town if they recognize that building. I hope you find answers to your puzzle of location. Can you tell from the date what children in your uncles' families might have been that age?

The farm looks so - I was doing to say desolate, but I think flat is a better word. It looks like one can see for miles around. The children sure look happy.

In Iowa at that time, everyone was poor. Houses were neglected and people really didn't keep them up neat. I was thinking it looked a lot like the Oklahoma set on Broadway but that was probably in a whole lot better shape

This was taken the year following Amelia Earhart's disappearance, which might explain the aviatrix goggles on the lefthand child?

Very moody picture! The children's shadows and the woman lurking on the porch . . . Yes, a great cover for a mystery.

These old photos without identifying info provide such an opportunity for detective work and deductive reasoning.
